Anal fissure/ Fissure in ano is a a small tear in the skin of the anal canal. It is usually caused by constipation (passage of hard stools) and occasionally by loose watery stools. Though not a dangerous condition by itself, it can be extremely distressing for the patient.
Painful defecation (while passing stool). The intensity is very severe in acute fissure and may be less in chronic cases.
Bleeding with stools.
This is the surgery performed for anal fissures that fail medical therapy. It is a minor operation and can also be carried out as a day care procedure. In this surgery, a small segment of the internal sphincter muscle is divided to lower the resting pressure. It leaves a small wound on the anal verge and does not require any dressing.
